“May I become” original limited edition blue/green lino print art

Original lino print: “May I become“. Limited edition of only two prints.

This is a commission and the person who commissioned it gave me permission to make more: in the end I only made two, one for them and one to sell.

It is inspired by two verses from a long Buddhist poem, ‘Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life’, by Shantideva, an 8th century Indian Buddhist monk, about living a life of compassion:

‘May I become a protector for the protectorless,
A guide for those who travel on the roads,
And for those wishing to cross water
May I become a boat, a ship, or a bridge.
May I become an island for those seeking dry land,
A lamp for those needing light,
A place of rest for those who desire one,
And a servant for those needing service.’
A star shines guiding light in the sky and lights up mountains in front of a body of water. In the centre of the water is a bridge or pier, and moored to the left of this structure in the middle distance is a small rowing boat. There are seven smaller stars in the sky.
